Moody Dog? Try Some CBD

Posted on

Would you describe your dog as "moody?" Maybe one minute they are pleasant and friendly, but the next minute they're snappy and unhappy with you. First, you should have your vet rule out any underlying health conditions that could be causing the moodiness. Then, once you're sure there's nothing more serious wrong, you can start exploring natural mood enhancers. A good one to start with is CBD.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol. This is a substance found in hemp, and since the Farm Bill was passed in 2018, it is legal to use in all 50 states. Many people use CBD for various purposes, but dog owners are also finding it useful. Don't worry — even though it is a compound found in cannabis, CBD will not make your dog feel high. It can, however, help quiet, enhance, and stabilize their mood.

When should you give CBD to your pet?

That's really up to you! Some dog owners like to give their dogs one or two doses a day, just to help keep things stable and consistent. Other dog owners keep CBD on-hand and only administer it when their dog is feeling particularly moody. You could also give it preemptively when you know something is going to happen to trigger your dog's moodiness. For instance, if you know they get grumpy every time a certain friend comes to visit, you can give them CBD right before that friend comes over.

How should you give CBD to your dog?

The easiest option is usually to look for CBD treats. These are normal dog treats that have been infused with a certain amount of CBD. Make sure you buy treats that contain the appropriate dose for your dog, which is 1 mg per 10 pounds of body weight. So if you have a 20-pound dog, you want to buy 2 mg CBD treats. You would feed one of those treats every time you want to give your dog a dose.

Some owners like to buy tiny, 1 mg CBD treats even if they have a larger dog. This enables you to scale the dose according to your needs. For example, you can give your 60-pound dog just two or three treats when he needs just a little bit of mood relief, or 6 treats when you want more drastic effects.

Moodiness in dogs can be a bit of a bummer, but CBD dog treats can be a natural option for keeping it under control.
